HANALEI — After last week’s regatta at the Wailua River, the Kauai Outrigger Association continued its season back on Kauai’s North Shore.
Koloa Canoe Club hosted this week’s regatta Saturday at Hanalei Pavilion Beach Park.
“The responsibility of holding a regatta is to make sure everybody participates,” said Koloa CC head coach Sa’le Potts. “We got a lot of family, parents, that back us up. And we get a lot of support from the whole community of Koloa, and the paddling community. That’s the only way we can make it happen.”
Eleven KOA clubs competed in Saturday’s regatta.
“Today, everybody’s going great,” Potts said. “The kids did great in the earlier events — the first 18 races. … and we (the adults) are doing pretty good right now. Everybody gets a chance to race. The main thing is to have fun. Win, lose or draw, we still support each other.”
In the senior women’s race, Hanalei won by nearly a minute with a time of 14:50.00. Pu’uwai came in second at 15:43.42, and Kukuiula was third with 15:54.37.
“It was good. There’s a pretty heavy wind on the way back, but that’s good because we like going upwind,” said Hanalei crew member Sarah Zietz. “Then on the way down, you just pace yourself. On the way up, that’s when you kind of make your move.
“But all of our turns were really good. The downside turns were pretty heavy because the nose is coming against the wind. But it was good,” she continued. “The boat felt really good. I think we had a couple of novices in our crew, too.”
Zietz added she’s happy to be back competing on the North Shore.
“Hanalei is definitely the best place to do it, just lane-wise. And then, well this is where we train. So, of course we want to have races here,” she said.
NaMolokama won the senior men’s race, clocking in at 12:33.65. Pu’uwai was second at 12:55.56.
“Beautiful conditions,” said NaMolokama crew member Hobey Beck. “It kind of cleaned up and got a little sunnier. Light wind, so the course was real smooth. Not a lot of surf. Just another beautiful day in Hanalei.”
