KALAHEO — The Supersonics’ Mayson Broyles lit the twine for 16 points to hand the Kauai Thunder a 44-20 defeat in an eighth grade boys division match Thursday night when the summer youth basketball league resumed its schedule of games at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Aiden Nalu Aguano led the Kauai Thunder 8B effort on five points before a good-sized audience of parents, supporters and Coach Max Manera of the Team Lihue Warriors who earlier in the evening fell to the Kauai Thunder fifth grade division boys, 39-21.
The loss in the eighth grade boys division saw the Kauai Thunder leave with a split after a strong showing from its fifth grade division boys against the Team Lihue Warriors which opened the action.
Kala‘iakea Esteban, Aukai Arruda and Joshua Rego heralded the little white-shirts with bombs from outside the three-point arc to lead the Thunder 5B to a 32-8 lead at the break. The Warrior 5B got six marks from Tevita Vaenuku.
Kahi Apao found the sweet spot from outside the three-point mark in the second half, but the effort came up short in the second half despite the Warriors outgunning the Thunder, 13-8.
Rego, finishing with a pair of treys, topped the Thunder scoring on 12 points. Isaac Mirey, the strong low post, added 10 marks, eight dropping in the first half. Kapono Sullivan added eight points and a strong inside presence to the Thunder 5B win.
Vaenuku topped the Warrior 5B effort on 10 points followed by Apao chipping in seven marks. Hunter Corpuz and Daesen Martinez each had second-half pairs in a clean match where no free throws were recorded.
Braelyn Cayaban found the three-ball in each of the halves and Kierstin Gummerus found the sweet spot in the second half to keep the Kaulupono 8G squad ahead of the Kauai Lynx, 32-29, despite the late-game surge from the Lynx. The eighth grade Lynx trimmed the eight-point halftime lead down to three points when Jessicar Cezar was two-for-two in the final 4.8 ticks of the game.
Cezar was a perfect five-for-five from the charity stripe and dumped all of her game-total nine points in the second half where team leader Amalya Sales found a trey en route to finishing with 11 points in the effort which reflected the honing gained from playing in the Kauai Hoops Classic tournament last week.
Cayaban topped the Kaulupono scoring on 10 points including two treys. Kaye Serapio finished with eight points. Hazel Serapio and Gummerus added seven points each in the win.
Over at the Bernice Hundley Gym, Jade Ines peeled off 12 points to lead the Dream Team to a 27-12 win over the Kauai Ballers in a girls eighth grade division match. Tasia Kamoku led the Kauai Ballers’ effort with six points.
On the boys’ court, the Lihue Lakers came up short on both of its games. Hanakila took the Lakers Gold on a 23-10 win in a boys’ sixth grade division match, and Na Koa posted a 57-31 victory over the Lakers Purple in the boys’ sixth grade division matchup.
Moku Ekolu-Tolenoa fired off nine points to lead Hanakila while Reyson Goias-Abrigo, one of the Kauai Yankees traveling to Japan, led the Lakers Gold effort on seven points.
Moni Malafu topped Na Koa’s win with 16 points with Ian Rapozo getting the lead for the Lakers Purple on 10 points.
