No injuries were reported and no homes were threatened despite the fire’s close proximity to a subdivision owned by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.
Personnel from the Kapaa and Kaiakea fire stations responded to the open field below Pilipoli Road about 5:50 p.m. They were assisted by Air 1, which provided water drops to the 30-acre fire.
The blaze was under control by 6:30 p.m. but firefighters located a large pile of abandoned mixed waste, such as vehicles, tires and other items, which made it difficult to fully extinguish the fire.
A crew from the Department of Public Works responded with a bull dozer and helped to move the waste to allow firefighters to access the items that continued to burn.
Firefighters left the scene about 9:30 p.m. but the abandoned waste is expected to smolder for some time.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
