NAWILIWILI — Scott Keene, owner of Nani Kai Adventures, came into work Tuesday morning just like any other day. Except this time, he found his newly opened shop vandalized.
Nani Kai, which opened July 1, suffered a defacement that left their front doors cracked along with smashed planting pots. An American flag was also missing.
By Wednesday morning, Keene had cleaned up the scene. And while he and his wife, Sally, were shaken up, they’re taking it in stride.
“We wanted to make sure we stayed open despite the damage,” said Keene, who moved to the Garden Isle last year.
Nani Kai Adventures, which is fully up and running, specializes in stand up pedal boards that utilizes a propulsion system. It also carries powered kayaks.
By 2018, Keene hopes to be giving tours that feature all of the market’s newest watersport technology.
Keene’s storefront wasn’t the only small business to have been vandalized in the Nawiliwili Harbor recently, however, as there have been reports that Bamboo Grill and Nawiliwili Tavern suffered damage to their property.
Owners at Bamboo Grill did not want to comment, but Jessica Geffert, owner of Nawiliwili Tavern, said that her business has broken windows and destruction around her property.
She emphasized that the culprit was not a patron of her tavern, and that it was a bar tender who spotted the suspect and called police.
Kauai Police Department didn’t respond to TGI’s request for information by press time.
