HANALEI — The Kauai Outrigger Association Championships were held Saturday at Hanalei Pavilion Beach Park to conclude the island’s paddling regular season.
“The season, actually, was really good as far as competition. A lot of close races,” said KOA race director Dana Miyake. “Seems like everything’s running smoothly — not as challenging as in the past, which is great. Also just the kids races being really close in all of the divisions, and also having a lot of entrees in the kids races” was great to see.
In the island championship regatta, clubs were put in divisions based on how many races the club entered and points were accumulated based on place finishes.
Hanalei won the AAA division (18-plus races) with 274 points. Puuwai was second with 183 points.
Kilohana won the AA division (nine to 17 races) with 138 points. Namolokama was second with 121, and Niumalu was third with 112.
Koloa won the A division (one to nine races) with 77 points. Hokualele was second with 39 points, and Kukuiula was third also with 39 points. Hokualele won the tie-breaker based on first- and second-place finishes.
Kilohana won the Na Opio division, or kids division, with 138 points. Niumalu was second with 112, and Puuwai was third with 101.
“If you see the adults, you see only two or three, maybe four (crews in each race). But in the kids races, it’s almost six or seven in every single one,” Miyake said. “Which is good. Hopefully, it will continue.”
The Hawaii Canoe Racing Association State Championship regatta will take place Aug. 5 on Maui. The lane drawing and pre-state meeting will take place July 29 on Oahu.
The first-place winners in each race earned a berth at states. Should the club decide to not enter, the spot is offered to the next runner-up, and so forth.
If the KOA doesn’t have a representative in a race, it’s then offered to another island association. Also, spots could be bought by a club that didn’t qualify with a first-place finish.
“At states, we could potentially buy a lane and those kids could also go and race. So, we could actually have two lanes from our association there,” Miyake said. “If we don’t, let’s say in a particular (race) — like we didn’t have a 65 Women today — in essence that’s an open lane that we offer up to other associations to buy.”
