Jamie Grilho, a sophomore at Aiea High School on Oahu, took all of her three matches during the dual meet July 6 at the Hanapepe Judo Club dojo.
The performance led her to being named the Directors Award for Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 2017 Westside Wrestling Camp Kauai vs. Oahu dual meet, the finale of the two-day wrestling camp at the Waimea Baptist wrestling room featuring Liberty University coach Allen Hackmann, Ursinus College coach Bill Racich, and coach Josh Mori who opened his Makana Training Center at the Waimea Pakahi Academy.
“Waimea Town is a great environment for a youth camp with lots of public and private facilities, restaurants and stores all in safe walking distance for the youth,” said Coach Mac Pigott of the Westside Wrestling Club. “Campers from Oahu, Maui and all parts of Kauai slept in the Waimea Neighborhood Center, the historic Waimea Theater opened their doors for a dinner and movie where everyone enjoyed a meal prepared by the Agena family, and food was donated by Syngenta Seeds.” Syngenta is now known as Hartung Brothers, Inc., Hawaii.
During the camp, Hackmann led a five-session “Technique and Toughness” clinic with the dual meet being an opportunity for wrestlers to apply the lessons.
“This was a great idea,” Hackmann said. “Following five sessions of my T&T clinic, I got to watch the wrestlers go at it, live, using techniques they had just learned.”
Pigott, who serves as the tournament director for the Kauai Interscholastic Federation wrestling program, said the dual meet format attempted to give every wrestler an appearance on the mat.
“We did our best to get everyone a match,” Pigott said. “I think just about every wrestler got at least one match before the night was over. Radford High School senior Grant Kawasaki and Aiea senior Christian Tavares demonstrated some of the best technical skills, and Aiea High School sophomore Alejandra Corral and Kapaa’s Braeden Jensen looked good winning both of their matches. There were a lot of good matches, but after studying all of the bout cards, I recognized one wrestler as the most outstanding — Jamie Grilho who won all three of her matches. In her last match, she fought back from an 0-8 score to win by fall — outstanding!”
