LIHUE — For Mark Oyama, the Traveling Plate is why he loves to cook.
“It provides us with an opportunity to collaborate with chef buddies we might not see all the time and to highlight the exceptional produce we have here in Hawaii,” he said.
Oyama’s Mark’s Place is one of about 50 restaurants from Hawaii participating in Traveling Plate, a culinary tour that benefits Easter Seals Hawaii. Top chefs will share their culinary creations on Kauai on Sunday.
“The Traveling Plate is a contemporary extension of Easter Seals Hawaii’s decades old tradition of connecting food and fun with awareness of our mission to empower people with disabilities and special needs,” said Ron Brandvold, president and CEO of Easter Seals Hawaii.
Traveling Plate started as a way to celebrate Easter Seals Hawaii’s 70th anniversary. Last year’s event was a hit, so organizers chose to expand it to be a month-long campaign.
The event kicks off Sunday, July 30, at 11 a.m. at Mark’s Place, 1610 Haleukana Street.
Participating chefs include Omaya and Mark “Gooch” Noguchi of the Pili Group. Tickets are $20.
“Traveling Plate is a great way for our chef community to come together to support a wonderful organization who has helped hundreds of our community members over the years,” Oyama said.
The event next goes to the Big Island on Aug. 13.
