“Ace of Aces” Hole-in-One
The Johnny G celebration of life is Sunday, July 30, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Hokuala Golf Club in Lihue. For all who knew John, he was a fierce friend with a wicked wit, as well as a “master” personal chef with a great passion for golf. His friends are friends for life, as are his families and customers.
John William Gillespie III passed away at home June 13, 2017, in Kilauea, after a long battle with cancer and coronary arterial disease. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, “the love of his life,” Elena Javinar of Kilauea, sisters Suzanne Gillespie Keeth of Las Vegas and Sally Gillespie of Akron, Ohio, nephews Matthew Gillespie (Becky), Christian Keeth (Ashley), Brian Zeno and Michael Zeno (Sara), and niece Jordan Keeth Galina (Mathew).
He was preceded in death by his parents and older sister, Gale Gillespie Zeno of Columbus, Ohio.
He was born in Akron, Ohio, on June 27, 1949, to John W. (Jack) Gillespie II and Hazel Alderdice Gillespie, where he grew up with his three sisters. He graduated from Revere Senior High in 1967, then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served two years, one year overseas in Seoul, South Korea, and was honorably discharged as SP5 in October 1974.
Upon returning to Akron after his military duty, he attended University of Akron, where he majored in criminal justice. During his college years, he was president of Lone Star Fraternity and began working at B.F. Goodrich, becoming an integral part of B.F. Goodrich T/A racing team, traveling worldwide to sponsored events on behalf of Goodrich.
He moved to Seattle to become involved in sales in the garment industry, and eventually moved to New York and Los Angeles in similar positions. He moved to Kauai in 1990 where he used his experience with cars and tires to work in the automotive sales industry. After a long career, he retired in 2015 from King Auto Center to pursue his love of golf fulltime.

Philip Panquites Jr.
Philip Panquites Jr., 92, of Kilauea, passed away on May 16, 2017.
Born on March 5, 1925, in Hawaii, he was a retired caretaker of parks for the County of Kauai.
He is survived by son Philip (Blanche) Panquites III, daughters Lynn (Philip) Steeno and Cindi (Ken) Shimonishi, sister Katherine Vares, 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, July 29, at St. Sylvester Church in Kilauea from 8:30 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m.

Lucy Barretto Freitas
Lucy Barretto Freitas of Kealia, born Sept. 1, 1923, passed away on June 28, 2017 at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital. She was 93, a housewife and seasonal worker at Hawaiian Fruit Packers.
She was preceded in death by her husband William Freitas, son Anthony G. Freitas Sr., and parents Joe and Lorinda Barretto.
She is survived by sons Jerome W. Freitas Sr. of Kealia, Steven M. (Lorna) Freitas of Kalaheo, daughters Patricia (Richard) Victorino of Wailua, Charlotte (Ronnie) Romero of Puhi and Paulette (Rodney) Bristol of Wailua, brothers John F. (Carol) Barretto Sr., Alfred “Tony” Barretto and Robert (Norma) Barretto, sister Alice (Archie) Fontanilla, 20 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at St. Catherine Church on July 22, with visitation from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by Mass. Burial will follow at St. Catherine Cemetery.
Juanita Sangbaan Claudio
Juanita Sangbaan Claudio, 87, of Kekaha, passed away on July 8, 2017 at Wilcox Medical Center. She was born on June 3, 1930, in the Philippines.
She was preceded in death by husband Marcelo Claudio and parents Arcadio and Marcela Sangbaan.
She is survived by sister Dolores Raquel of Kekaha, nephew Jay Radoc of California, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, July 21, at Garden Island Mortuary from 9 to 9:45 a.m., where services will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kalapaki Bay Memorial Park cemetery. The family suggests aloha attire and that flowers be omitted.

Michael T. Miyake
Michael T. Miyake passed away on July 13, 2017, at the age of 70. Born on Aug. 2, 1946, in Lihue, he was a retired real estate broker.
He was preceded in death by father Tsukasa Miyake, mother Doris Yoshida and Mitsuyo Uda.
He is survived by wife Phyllis Miyake of Lihue, sons Keone (Dana) Miyake of Anahola, Bryan Tsukasa (Elle) Miyake of Waimea and Martin K. (Angie) Miyake of Kahuku, Oahu, grandchildren Malia Lei Mokihana, Maile Kamalani, Nainoa Miyake Keaupuni, Isabella Malu Miyake, Kaikea, Lilinoe, and Hiilei Miyake, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, July 21, at Lihue Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 9 to 10:45 a.m., where services will be celebrated at 11 a.m.
The family suggests casual attire.

Dominga Celestina Sagisi Alcaraz
Dominga Celestina Sagisi Alcaraz of Puhi passed away at home on July 15, 2017, at the age of 94. She was born in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, on May 13, 1923, and retired from Lihue Plantation as a field worker.
She was preceded in death by husband Generoso Alcaraz, daughter Felicidad Gamiao, parents Quintin and Bernabela Sagisi, brother Justo (Juana) Sagisi, sisters Celedonia (Agustin) Galiza, Cresencia (Telesforo) Acojido, Josefina Gascon and Vicky (Faustino) Hernandez.
She is survived by son Inocencio “Joe” (Connie) Alcaraz of Puhi, daughters Lolita Tagudan and Monica Guerrero of the Philippines and Susan (Melvin) Braceros of Puhi, 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, nine great-great grandchildren, sister Elisa (Escolastico) Adaoag, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 29, at Immaculate Conception Church, with viewing from 8 to 9:30 a.m. with Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.
