HANALEI – The National Weather Service has extended the Flash Flood Warning for Kauai until 8 p.m., as runoff and stream levels remain high over areas across the island.
Kuhio Highway, in the vicinity of the Hanalei Bridge, is closed until further notice due to flooding. And the American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Hanalei Elementary School.
Officials report a downed tree over Kuhio Highway at Lumahai. Personnel from the state Department of Transportation are responding.
Kauai Island Utility Cooperative has also reported localized power outages throughout the island. KIUC crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible.
Haena and Kē’ē beaches are closed to swimming, and Grove Farm has closed the access road to Mahaulepu until further notice due to hazardous conditions.
Officials are reporting heavy ponding, low visibility and other hazardous driving conditions across the island. Motorists are advised to drive with extreme caution.
