NAWILIWILI — Ten years ago, community activists showed up at Nawiliwili Harbor and met the inaugural voyage of what is known as the Superferry with a hard “no.”
The inter-island car ferry “Alakai” reached Nawiliwili Harbor from Oahu on Aug. 26, 2007, and was met by a line of protesters blocking it from docking.
After a few hours, the Coast Guard turned the vessel around and sent it out of the harbor because it couldn’t dock without threatening the safety of the people in the water.
On the 10th anniversary of that standoff, Kauai EcoRoundtable and the Kauai Chapter of Surfrider Foundation are holding a panel discussion and celebration.
“This will be a look at how we ran a successful environmental campaign,” said Gordon LaBedz, an organizer.
The event is planned for Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. at Nawiliwili Yacht Club. Admission is free. Music by Malama Pono All Stars will follow the panel discussion, along with wine.
The celebration will feature veterans who will talk about the successful campaign and is geared toward information sharing between long-time conservationists and the new generation of activists. Rallies, hearings, petitions, lobbying, direct action and lawsuits were all part of the process, and will all be on the table for discussion.
