KAPAA — Kauai residents will have a chance to help bring an end to Alzheimer’s Disease.
On Saturday, at Kapaa Beach Park, the Alzheimer’s Association will host its annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
There will be prizes, a silent auction, music and a pancake breakfast. Registration starts at 7 a.m., and the walk kicks off at 8 a.m.
The walk is part of a national event that is held in more than 600 communities nationwide.
Alzheimer’s Disease rates are increasing, and it’s the most expensive disease in the US because people who have dementia need people to help them, according to Laurel Coleman, of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Taking care of an inflicted loved one can become a full-time job, and the disease is a leading cause for personal bankruptcy for both the person affected and their family.
It is the only disease that is in the top 10 causes of death that has no cure or treatment.
“That’s why we walk. We walk for hope, and we walk to provide needed support for persons living with dementia and their caregivers,” Coleman said.
The Alzheimer’s Association has awarded $350 million in dementia research since its inception.
