KAPAA — The skate scene on Kauai is alive and well, and Yes I & Elephit Skate Shop wants the island’s skateboarders to gather together from noon to 3 :30 p.m., Sunday, at Anaina Hou Community Park in Kilauea.
The skate shop will be hosting a Mini Ramp and Street Jam this weekend with live art, prizes and giveaways for participants of any age and skill level.
“I’ve had quite a few up there already, I’ve done at least five up there (at the park),” said skate shop co-owner Cameron Lovelace. “It’s an excuse to get everyone together and have a skate day, to hype up the skate scene here.”
The skate sessions that Lovelace and his business partner, Sean McCrink, have organized have been popular so far. Lovelace said that on average, anywhere between 25-40 skaters come together to celebrate their passion for the sport.
“People think there’s less people skating than there really is, even kids like us who still skate. It’s a small community, everyone pretty much knows each other,” Lovelace said. “Before we been put out the flier, all the kids knew about it already. Word travels fast on Kauai. There’s been times where I haven’t put up fliers for these types of things and people just know about it. Everybody still shows up.”
Lovelace added that working with Anaina Hou Community Park has been a great relationship because they both collaborate on events to make it about the kids.
“Working with the mini golf up there, they’re really supportive of the skaters up there and you’d be surprised by how much they care about the kids up there,” Lovelace said. “And hopefully, there will be a skate park up there soon.”
Smaller ramps will be available for beginners, while bigger ones will be for more experience skaters. Entry fee is $10 and Lovelace said they will be doing a pop-up shop Saturday night at the Kilauea Night Market at Anaina Hou Community Park.
