Westside basketball’s Kelani Lewis had ignited in the second half, dropping six of his game-total 12 points including a pair of free throws with 7.9 ticks showing in the team’s matchup against the Team Lihue Warriors fifth grade boys division.
The clock, however, had a different idea as it sounded with the ball mid-air on a 32-20 Warrior victory to trigger the onslaught of players from the Dream Team and Kauai Lynx onto the floor for the second of three games contested during the final week of play for the summer league.
Tevita Vaenuku sparked the Warrior victory with a 16-point showing as well as capitalizing on his height for defensive play which included several shot blocks and key rebounds. Daesen Martinez and Kanaloa Yasutake each lent three points to the win. Xaeden Valdez and John Vincent Sibuya each finished with pairs.
Lewis topped the Westside scoring on 10 points followed by Sheldon Jamorabon adding seven. Josiah Delos Reyes was held to just five points with Orion Magaoay ending with four points. Lokahi Delos Reyes and Javin Bagaoisan-Kaneakua each added pairs.
Olivia Malafa and Lilinoe Makepa Andaya took the lead for the Dream Team fifth grade division girls in outdistancing the Kauai Lynx in the second event. Malafa’s height advantage netted nine points for the Dream Team as well as key rebounds while Makepa Andaya’s strength and quickness on the floor yielded five points in the victory.
Jazlyn Phillips matched up against Malafa’s height to come up with a pair in the first half — the Lynx’s only score in that time frame. Denise Alfonso and Leeann Vegas dropped pairs in the second half to lead the Lynx effort that closed with Leila Morikawa dropping the tail end of a charity pair.
Liana Hasegawa took the lead for the Kaulupono fifth grade division girls and dropped a game-high 10 points in its 28-15 showing over the A‘o uka Rebels in the nightcap. Strong guard Katelyn Constantino added nine points in the win.
Skylyn Fagarang finished with seven points to fuel the Rebels’ effort.
