POIPU — When the People Attentive To Children crew created a lei for the Sheraton Kauai Resort May Day Lei Contest, they never realized the reward would be the proceeds from Table 53 for the month of May.
The PATCH lei won the contest judged by patrons to the Auli‘i Luau on May first with the reward being the proceeds from Table 53 located inside the RumFire Po‘ipu for the month.
Wednesday, Lorraine Shimauchi, Thao Tu, and Mary Lu Kelley, the PATCH Kauai coordinator, was presented $3,604 representing the proceeds from Table 53 under the Sheraton Kauai’s You Dine, We Donate program.
Shimauchi and Kelley, manning the lei judging table, introduced Thao Tu, the latest addition to the Kauai PATCH team.
“Thao is in charge of the newest program PATCH is the Home Visitor Training Institute,” Kelley said. “HVTI is a free program that offers training, career mentoring, resources, and technical assistance for agencies that offer home services.”
June Cappiello, spokeswoman for the Sheraton Kauai, said the Table 53 program is nearing nearly $190,000 in presentations since the program started five years ago. A different local nonprofit is selected to be the beneficiary for each month.
Under terms of the program, net proceeds of food and beverages during dinner service at Table 53 will be donated to a designated charity for the month.
The designated recipient of Table 53 for August is the Kauai Economic Opportunity.
