HONOLULU — Sen. Jill Tokuda announce her candidacy for lieutenant governor during a campaign kickoff Wednesday at the Honolulu YWCA.
“I am truly humbled by the outpouring of support I’ve received on my candidacy for lieutenant governor. Hawaii deserves leaders that will look forward and work together for our families, for our children and for our future,” Tokuda said.
Tokuda was elected to Hawaii State Senate in 2006 and served as chair of the education and ways-and-means committees. She previously worked as lieutenant governor aide and as director of development for the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii.
“I look back with deep gratitude to those who helped me over the years, preparing me to lead, collaborate and solve problems on behalf of the people of Hawaii,” Tokuda said. “I realize that this is my time to step up, serve in a larger role and redouble my commitment to educating our children, supporting working families, creating jobs, protecting our natural resources and moving Hawaii toward a brighter future.”
Sen. Mazie Hirono will serve as honorary chair of the Tokuda for Lieutenant Governor campaign.
“I’ve known Jill Tokuda for over 20 years, since she first came to work for me when I served as Lieutenant Governor,” Hirono said. “She is not afraid to take principled positions, even when the issues are difficult; and she does so with the highest regard for what’s best for the people of our state. Jill is part of my ohana and she has my full endorsement to be Hawaii’s next Lieutenant Governor.”
