HONOLULU – HILuxury, Hawaii’s premier luxury lifestyle magazine, has spotlighted many bigger-than-life celebrities — 60 in fact — on its cover since it debuted more than 10 years ago.
But none personify the definition of “superhero” quite like British Columbia-born and former Kauai resident Serinda Swan, who plays the role of Medusa in “Marvel’s Inhumans,” debuting in IMAX theaters Sept. 1 and on ABC in the fall.
“We were introduced to Serinda by Harold Julian, a Hawaii- and New York City-based fashion photographer,” said Linda Woo, publisher of the magazine division of HILuxury’s parent company, Oahu Publications, Inc. “Harold’s sensual photos of the ‘not-so-innocent’ Serinda are a perfect complement to our ‘She’s No Angel’ feature.” The photos were shot on location at Honolulu’s Park Lane Ala Moana.
This is the first magazine cover for the 33-year-old actress/model, who has appeared in movies (her first at age 3 with Ted Danson and Isabella Rossellini), commercials (including Milky Way and Macy’s), and as one of the faces of Guess?Watches.
But she’s best known for her roles on television megahits including “Smallville,” “Breakout Kings,” “Chicago Fire,” (in a recurring role as Brittany Baker) on USA’s crime drama “Graceland” (as Paige Arkin) for three seasons, and, recently, on Dwayne Johnson’s HBO show “Ballers.” She just finished working opposite Jessica Lange on FX’s new show “Feud: Bette and Joan.”
In “Marvel’s Inhumans,” Swan plays a member of the fictional superhumans’ royal family, serving as the queen of Attilan, and is the interpreter and most trusted adviser for the mute Black Bolt, the Inhumans’ ruler. She uses her long hair as both a shield and a weapon that allows her to grab people and keep them in a vice-like grip.
In the nine-page spread, Swan tells writer Yu Shing Ting about getting a life-changing call from Jeph Loeb, Marvel head of television and executive producer. According to Swan, Loeb said, “‘Serinda, welcome to Marvel,’ and I just started crying — I was so excited. I always wanted to play a superhero.”
The August/September issue of HILuxury hit newstands Tuesday.
“Hawaii is experiencing a resurgence as a location for filmmaking, evidenced most recently by the filming of ‘Marvel’s Inhumans’ and the sequel to ‘Jurassic World’ coming out in theaters in 2018,” said Dave Kennedy, Oahu Publications’ chief revenue officer. “We’re thrilled to be a part of promoting ‘Marvel’s Inhumans,’ particularly since it was filmed entirely on Oahu and showcases our amazingly beautiful state.”
