Kauai’s Sammy Morretino is the youngest drop-knee bodyboarding world champion.
Morretino defeated fellow Kauaian Dave Hubbard in the drop-knee final of the 2017 Sinata Pro in Praia Grande, Portugal earlier this month with a score of 15.40 to earn world champion-status. Hubbard scored a 12.00.
“It’s the biggest accomplishment I’ve ever had in my life and brought the title back to Hawaii,” Morretino said to SurferToday following the contest.
Morretino is still competing in Portugal in the Viana World Bodyboarding Championships, which began Wednesday.
After two rounds, Morretino made the top eight. Hawaii’s Mac Crilley is also in the top eight, according to boxscorenews.com.
