NAWILIWILI — Fast Company went hunting and found the wind Thursday during the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Gene Wells Memorial Race No. 4 at the Nawiliwili Harbor.
Racing in 10 to 18-knot winds blowing out of the northeast, the seven-boat fleet hobbled through the 4.8-mile course hampered by the missing buoy which resulted in two legs of racing which kept the boats away from the area where the buoys were absent.
Fast Company was one of the three Olson 30s who jockeyed for the lead in the pack. She was joined by OZone and Kato, currently leading the Series with three first-place wins. The seesaw between Fast Company and OZone waged until the final ticks when Fast Company found a wind gust which pushed her across the finish line on an elapsed sail of 50 minutes and corrected to 50:05 PHRF for first place honors.
She was followed by OZone (51:09 elapsed, 51:15 PHRF) and Kato (52:40 elapsed, 52:45 PHRF). Others in the fleet included Weatherly (56:28 elapsed, 56:33 PHRF), Bonjolea II (53:17 elapsed, 56:47 PHRF), Speedy (59:28 elapsed, 59:33 PHRF) and Papa a‘u (1:03:35 elapsed, 1:00:52 PHRF).
Weatherly, not running a spinnaker due to a short crew, topped the Club class with a 51:24 Club correction followed by Speedy (52:23 Club) and Bonjolea II (54:38 Club).
The Gene Wells Memorial Race No. 5 takes place, Thursday with the first flags flying at 5 p.m.
