Betty Gatewood of San Jose, California, said Saturday that she was born in Koloa as a Ferreira when she came home with her daughter Lisa Gatewood and had to check out the Kauai Community Market (John McClure of Moloaa Bay Coffee and Chocolate said the Ferdinand Dosono Kauai Kim Chee loco moco was the bomb).
Daphne McClure was thrilled when they saw exchange students Takuya Masui and Rentaro Kubo (they have classes with the real Amber McClure) who were enjoying the ice cold fresh coconuts Wednesday in Kukuiula. John offered them free drinks, and they started helping at the truck after doing an interview with Daphne.
Saturday must have been a Kauai Kim Chee kind of day because Sandi Kato-Klutke missed the whole thing with the exchange students, but had to have a Kauai Kim Chee burger, while Zack Wilczewski of Makaweli Meat Co. ordered his loco moco (Ferdinand uses Makaweli Meat for his patties).
Kudos to Ed Kawamura Sr. (he was wondering about taking his water machine home), who finished the set up for the “Unlikely Liberators” exhibit that opens Tuesday at the Kauai Veterans Center at 3 p.m. Kenny Ishii was on hand with the food, and Gen. Myron Dobashi (Jean was at the Pop Warner Jamboree!) is ready to go as a volunteer for the exhibit, which runs from Sept. 6-27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
