HANAPEPE — The Kapaa Eagles walked out of Hanapepe Stadium with a 3-0 record over the Kekaha Titans, Saturday when the Kauai Pop Warner Football League hosted its first week of play.
Including the results of the flag football program, the Eagles posted a 20-0 win over the Titans in the Mighty Mite division, a 33-7 win in the Junior PeeWee division, and a 28-0 win in its flag football outing.
The nightcap saw the Hanapepe Colts finish with three wins and a tie against the Lihue Raiders, the tie coming in the Mighty Mite division where both teams battled to a 0-0 tie.
The Colts took a 19-12 edge in flag football before two pass interceptions — a 27-yard return by Kameron Lee, and a 47-yard return by Iziah Henderson — fueled the Colts to a 26-0 win over the Raiders in the JPW division. Henderson hit Kamu Santiago on a 31-yard pass in the opening stanza, and Santiago found the end zone at the end of a seven-yard charge in the second quarter. Connor Mullikin split the uprights following Santiago’s TD for the final math.
Maka Shigematsu notched a six-yard score, passed to Edward Dela Cruz for a 24-yard touchdown, and booted a pair of PATs to lead the Hanapepe Colts’ 22-0 showing over the Lihue Raiders in the Junior Varsity division game. Ryson Waalani scored on a one-yard charge in the third quarter for the final accounting.
Nainoa Melchor ran for two touchdowns — a 28-yard in the third quarter and a 25-yard in the fourth quarter — and pulled in a 40-yard scoring pass from Kimo Kupihea to open the fourth quarter in Kapaa’s 20-0 win over Kekaha in the Mighty Mite matchup. A Colton Neuman PAT boot following Melchor’s 25-yard score figured in the final accounting.
Makenya Okelger put Kekaha on the boards in the final two minutes of the opening stanza during the JPW matchup that opened the day of football. Kaili Arakaki cradled the pigskin for the PAT.
But Kapaa answered just 30 seconds later when Kahiapo Kuhaulua-Leong, throwing for three touchdown passes, hit Keaka Kauhane on a 48-yard strike. The PAT failed and Kekaha sat on a 7-6 edge until Cody Barnes found the end zone at the end of a 15-yard run, Nainoa Simmons doing the PAT run for the 13-7 bulge at the break.
Shawn Paraga announced the Eagles on a four-yard score in the second half, Kuhaulua-Leong hitting Kauhane for the PAT.
This point-after started the passing when Kuhaulua-Leong hit Kauhane for a six-yard score, following that with an aerial to Nash Ahloo for the PAT, and then connecting with Ahloo for the final score at the end of an 11-yard air delivery.
Games for the Kauai Pop Warner Football League moves to Sunday as the island makes its transition to daytime football. Hanapepe Stadium will host four games starting at 8 a.m. when the Hanapepe Colts take on the Kapaa Eagles, featuring the Mighty Mite division contest starting at 10 a.m. when the Colts and Eagles, both undefeated, meet. The afternoon series will feature the Lihue Raiders going up against Koloa starting with a 12:30 p.m. kickoff for the JPW division.
