LIHUE — Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall is closed.
The community stage isn’t scheduled to reopen until June 30 due to an asbestos removal project.
The scope of the $181,000 project will be to remove asbestos-laced floor tiles from the building, install new floor tiles, and also install new ceramic tiles on the kitchen walls to enhance cleanliness and maintenance.
“The closure is unfortunate, however, we appreciate the public’s patience as the project is part of the county’s effort to provide quality customer service,” said Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho Jr. in a previous press release. “We look forward to reopening the facility once upgrades and renovations are complete.”
The contractors are Pacific Concrete Coring &Cutting, Inc and Creative Partition Systems.
The issue of asbestos at War Memorial was brought to the county’s attention by employee Charles Rapozo. He remains employed by the county, but filed a lawsuit against the county last year alleging retaliation over his reporting of the matter.
