LIHUE — An Anahola man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to an incident in February when he and an accomplice tried to run over three on-duty police officers.
LIHUE — An Anahola man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to an incident in February when he and an accomplice tried to run over three on-duty police officers.
As stipulated in the plea agreement, Kalei Hiilei Goodwin, 31, pleaded guilty to attempted assault in the first degree, which was reduced from attempted murder in the first degree. He also pleaded guilty to numerous drug and firearm charges as part of a packaged plea bargain with state and county prosecutors.
“You’re very fortunate to have been given this opportunity,” said Judge Kathleen Watanabe Wednesday after the sentencing.
On Feb. 9, police say Goodwin and his accomplice, Kanbert Alapai, 35, were driving separate cars when they attempted to run over Brian Silva, James Rodriguez and Kapena Wilson while they were on duty, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
The sentencing, according to a news release from the State of Hawaii’s Attorney General’s office, who helped prosecute the case, means Goodwin has been convicted of all the charges to which he pleaded guilty.
“Today’s sentence holds Goodwin accountable for driving a car towards law enforcement officers who put themselves on the front line to keep us safe,” said Attorney General Douglas S. Chin in the release.
