The Hawaii State Data Center released highlights of the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey Thursday, which contains statistical information about local households.
Throughout the United States, the Census Bureau surveyed a total of 48,457 households during a five-year period, an average of 9,691 per year. In Hawaii, 9 percent of the population was surveyed from 2012-2016, including households on Kauai.
“The American Community Survey allows us to track incremental changes across our nation on how people live and work, year-to-year,” said David Waddington, chief of the HSDC Social, Economic, and Housing Statistics Division.
He said the estimates help people, businesses and governments throughout the country better understand the needs of their populations, the markets in which they operate and the challenges and opportunities they face.
According to survey results, the largest average household size of 4.05 people per home was in Puhi-Hanamaulu, while the highest annual household income, with an average of $81,241 per year, was in Eleele-Kalaheo.
Anahola was ranked with the highest civilian unemployment rate on Kauai at 8.3 percent, while coming in number one with the most owner-occupied housing units on the island at 80.3 percent, while home values in Haena-Hanalei were valued at $863,200, the highest on Kauai.
