LIHUE — Pineapple Pilates has had the doors of its breezy little studio open in the Harbor Mall for a year, and owner Jennifer Davis is hosting a party on Nov. 7 to celebrate.
“Everything has been going so well. We’ve done so many changes in the past year. Now we’re a fully equipped studio,” Davis said. “We have all the apparatus and we changed the studio around a lot.”
The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and is set to be an evening of DJ music and dancing with catered food, drinks and a photo booth.
It’s a chance for the community to come and check out the studio, learn about Pilates and take advantage of class package specials.
Davis opened Pineapple Pilates in November 2016, after moving to Kauai from the Dominican Republic, where she was running Pilates for Hope — a studio that donated much of its profits to education.
She found Pilates while living in Key Largo, Florida and apprenticed with Romana Kryzanowska for a year before earning more than 900 hours of training and becoming a certified teacher in 2010.
Kryzanowska was the protegee of Joseph Pilates, creator of the method.
After studying with Kryzanowska, Davis taught in Singapore and Bermuda studios before moving to the Dominican Republic, and then on to Kauai.
Pineapple Pilates offers mat and apparatus classes Monday through Friday and also offers private sessions, duets and trios Monday through Saturday, upon request.
Mondays, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., Davis offers a free class for veterans and their spouses.
Giving back to the community is also important to Davis, who opened Pineapple Pilates with the plan to host fundraisers and donate time and resources to the community.
In the past year, the company has spent a little more than $10,000 helping people in the Kauai community and around the world.
Worldwide, Pineapple Pilates students sent two Dominican Republic girls to an English as a second language school and helped a Pilates studio that was damaged by Hurricane Irma in Key Largo.
On Kauai, Pineapple Pilates has donated resources to the Kauai Humane Society and done toy and clothes drives for the women’s shelter.
Silent auctions have gotten lesson donations from Pineapple Pilates and students at the studio helped fund scholarships for the terno ball and for Island School.
“We try to help everybody a little bit,” Davis said. “We’re looking forward to being able to support the community.”
Pineapple Pilates is on the second floor of the Harbor Mall.
