LIHUE — The Kauai Police Department on Friday announced a warning to residents about a phone scam in which callers impersonate law enforcement officers and demand payment to avoid arrest.
In the scam, callers impersonate law enforcement officers and claim the victim has a warrant for arrest due to missed jury duty or unpaid fines. The victim is pressured to pay fines immediately through untraceable payment methods such as prepaid cards, money transfer services, or digital payment platforms.
These phone calls may appear to be legitimate with scammers using real names, court addresses, or manipulated caller ID.
If you receive any unsolicited phone calls demanding payment, hang up immediately and report any suspicious calls or messages to the Kauai Police Department Dispatch at 808-241-1711.
KPD also encourages family members and caretakers of elderly residents to review the following scam warnings with their loved ones:
• KPD will never ask for payments for fines or legal matters.
• All official communication from the courts will be sent by mail, not over the phone.
• If in doubt about a phone call, hang up and contact KPD at 808-241-1711.
• Be cautious of high pressure tactics and urgent payment requests.
• Do not share personal or financial information with unknown callers.
