In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Kauai County Committee on the Status of Women will host a free screening of the documentary film “Rise of the Wahine” on Saturday, March 8 at 2 p.m. at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center (KCCPAC). The event is open to the public and all sports teams.
This inspiring documentary tells the true story of the University of Hawai‘i Wahine Volleyball team, highlighting their journey through adversity and their pivotal role in shaping women’s athletics. As part of the 2025 Women’s History Month theme — “Moving Forward TOGETHER! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations” — the film celebrates perseverance, collaboration, and breaking barriers.
Directed by Hawaii-born filmmaker Dean Kaneshiro, the film explores the significance of Title IX, the landmark law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in educational programs and activities. Featuring interviews with key figures such as Dr. Bernice Sandler and Gwendolyn Mink, along with personal stories from former Wahine players and coach Dave Shoji, the documentary illustrates the challenges the team faced and their transformative impact on sports, education, and gender equality.
Kaneshiro explains, “This journey has forever changed my heart and inspired me to raise my sons and daughters in an empowering way. I hope the Wahine story inspires future generations to challenge injustice in all forms.”
“Rise of the Wahine: Champions of Title IX” is not just a documentary; it is a powerful reminder of how individuals can change culture, fight for equality, and inspire future generations. It encourages viewers to honor one another, rise above adversity, and advocate for a world where injustice is no longer tolerated.
Title IX is a landmark law that states, in part, that no person in the United States shall, based on sex, be excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. This critical piece of legislation was pivotal in ensuring equal opportunities for women in education and sports, and it serves as a foundation for the story told in “Rise of the Wahine.”
We invite you to attend this remarkable screening celebrating Women’s History Month and learn more about the champions who helped establish gender equality in sports and beyond.
