LIHUE — A new digital fare payment system has been introduced to further ensure a seamless and enjoyable onboarding experience when commuting on public transportation.
The Kauai Bus has launched a new digital payment method that will allow commuters to purchase any bus fare ticket whether it’s a single-ride ticket, day pass, monthly pass, or an annual pass directly from their smartphone at any time, according to a press release.
“Our team has always sought ways to modernize antiquated government processes, and this new development from the Kauai Bus does exactly that,” said Mayor Derek Kawakami.
“This new mobile ticketing app makes it easier than ever for residents and visitors to ride the Kauai Bus.”
Digital onboard ticket validators have been installed across the entire Kauai Bus fleet, ensuring a faster and more seamless onboarding experience. The ticket validators system is powered by Masabi, a company delivering Fare Payments-as-a-Service through its open Justride platform.
“Bringing convenience and efficiency to our riders has always been a top priority of our mayor and his administration,” said Transportation Agency Executive Celia Mahikoa.
“This new mobile ticketing system is a first step forward in transforming the way we provide an accessible and reliable service to riders. Whether you’re commuting to work, running errands, or exploring Kauai, everyone can now enjoy a faster, more modern way to travel.”
Plans include the introduction of Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) and Open Payments, enabling riders to benefit from fare capping for more equitable pricing and the flexibility to pay using smartcards, contactless bank cards, or mobile wallets. These advancements aim to simplify payments, enhance accessibility, and ensure riders always pay the best fare for their journeys.
“Mobile ticketing is a cornerstone of modernizing public transit and creating a better rider experience,” said Brian Zanghi, CEO of Masabi.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with the County of Kauai to bring this innovative solution to the island’s transit system. Together, we are not only improving the travel experience for passengers but also helping to build a more efficient and sustainable public transportation network.”
The app also gives riders the option to manage their Stored Value Accounts (SVA) through either the app or an online portal, making it easy to add funds and purchase fares at their convenience.
The Kauai Bus Etickets app is now available to download.
