KAPAA — Waimea and Kapaa high school girls basketball teams won their respective matches on Monday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation contests waged at the Clem Gomes Gym and the Bernice Hundley Gym.

The Menehune took a 57-31 victory over visiting Island School wahine behind an 11-point lead from Shayleah Guerrero who pocketed a trey in the second quarter. She was followed by Katelyn Constantino stepping up for nine points including a final quarter threeball. MJ Angala added seven marks, including a second stanza trey, and guard Hailey Mata finished with six points coming from a pair of treys.
The Voyagers’ hot hand belonged to Halia Vicoy Fuimaono who finished with a game-high 14 points, followed by Voyager guard Breyanna Alfonso adding eight points, including a pair of treys.
Over at the Bernice Hundley, Ginger Nunes recorded a game-high 18 points to lead the Kapaa Junior Varsity to a 37-20 win over the Kauai JV. Alicia Sa followed with eight points, including a first quarter trey that helped Kapaa take a 13-4 lead.
Red Raider JV guard Kaimi Miyasato led the Kauai JV effort with nine points followed by Nina Lorenzo with six points and Noelani Garcia with five points.
On the varsity court at the Bernice Hundley, the varsity Lady Warriors pulled ahead of a 39-39 stalemate following three quarters of heavily contested ball. Alena Abell dropped eight points and Taira Samiano lent seven marks to lead Kapaa to a 21-15 run leading to its final 55-44 victory that came with four Red Raider starters strapped to the bench with fouls.
Samiano finished with high scoring honors on 19 points followed by Abell with 12 points. Trinity Guillen was a rebound factor and finished with 19 points. Tyra Carvalho added five points.
Red Raider guard Jazlyn Corpuz topped the Kauai effort on 14 points, including a pair of treys, and low post Lailah Kalani added eight points along with Kamryn Wellings who popped a pair of treys for her eight points. Zariah Fernandez and Anaiah Mendez each finished with five points.
With a week remaining in the KIF girls basketball season, Kauai next meets Waimea on Thursday at the Clem Gomes Gym, and Kapaa meets Island School at the Wilcox Gymnasium. Both sites host single matches starting at 6:30 p.m.
