POIPU — The Shops at Kukuiula announced on Wednesday that it will be hosting its annual Flavors of Kukuiula event in celebration of the Lunar New Year — the Year of the Snake — on Jan. 31 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Guests are able to enjoy memorable live performances from the Tsunami Taiko drummers, firecrackers and the Chinese lions, and the Kauai Kollab. As Kauai’s largest family-friendly pau hana party, Flavors of Kukuiula will offer culinary bites and cool refreshments from participating restaurants.
“The annual Chinese New Year celebration at The Shops at Kukuiula is one of the brightest events of the year on Kauai,” said Senior Property Manager Mike Hubbard “We are excited to share our special festivities with our guests.”
The lighting of strings of firecrackers and the appearance of the lions at the Lion Dance start the evening followed by Tsunami Taiko continuing the drumming performance following the return of the lions that make a shopping center tour. The evening closes with live music by the Kauai Kollab.
According the Chinese New Year website at www.chinesenewyear.net, the Lunar New Year, celebrated as the Spring Festival 2025 falls on Jan. 29, and celebrtations culminate with Lantern Festival on Feb. 12. This 2025 year is the Year of the Snake, the sixth animal of the 12-animal Chinese zodiac.
Tsunami Taiko is a Kauai youth taiko group whose members range in age from 5 to 18 years old and hail from Waimea on the island’s West Side. Melia Okura and Beau Acoba are the young adult leaders who grew up as taiko performers and have a desire to teach the Tsunami Taiko students.
Kauai Kollab is a collective of accomplished musicians from Kauai and abroad dedicated to fostering strong partnerships with the community and local businesses. Formed in 2018, the group draws inspiration from a diverse range of genres, including traditional Hawaiian music, Motown, reggae, rap, hip-hop, soft rock and original compositions.
