NAWILIWILI — People need food, Kauai Independent Food Bank Executive Director Kelvin Moniz told a group of Kauai Marriott Beach Club associates, including Manager Sherri Sanchez Holcomb, Wednesday when the Marriott group arrived with three truckloads of food.
A light mist dusted the crew that transformed the front of KIFB to a receiving area instead of a food distribution hub.
The mist continued as KIFB staff and Marriott associates unloaded the truckloads of food to prevent the moisture from making the cardboard boxes and canned food labels soggy.
“The rice is going to start growing,” a Marriott associate said while unloading bags of rice onto a pallet.
Food insecurity affects everyone, Moniz said.
“You cannot tell who is a victim of food insecurity,” he said. “It could be you, or the person next to you. We at KIFB take care of anyone who faces food insecurity. And it is because of the help of people like yourselves, we can do what we do.”
The Marriott Kauai Beach Club, including its Kauai Lagoons property, delivered a total of 2,645 pounds of food. Moniz said that is equal to about one or two weeks of servicing food needs through its various programs, including the backpack program that sends food home with schoolchildren for the weekends.
