LIHUE — Online tickets for the Island Breeze concert are available at www.islandbreezeconcert.eventbrite.com for the concert that will take place Saturday at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center.
Carol Yotsuda of the Garden Island Arts Council said tickets will also be available at the box office on the night of the concert. Attendance is free for those under 18.
Doors to the concert open at 5 p.m. on Saturday for the concert that is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
“Music lovers are in for a rare treat as three masters of their craft on three very different instruments join forces in the Island Breeze concert,” Yotsuda said. “These masters have a long connection with Kauai.”
Shakuhachi grandmaster Dr. Riley Lee, taiko drum master Kenny Endo, and slack key guitar virtuoso Jeff Peterson linked up during a week-long residency in Honolulu in 2012.
“Each conducted intensive workshops and sought to skillfully blend their individual styles to create an inspired sound distinctive to the Hawaiian Islands,” Yotsuda said. “They presented their concert at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Orvis Auditorium.”
The trio recorded “Island Breeze” in 2014 that was nominated in 2015 for Na Hoku Hanohano awards, the Hawaii version of the Grammy’s, for Album of the Year and Instrumental Song of the Year.
“All three artists have a long history with the people of Kauai as they have performed for many different audiences over the past three-plus decades, and shared their unique gifts with many groups and individuals on this island,” Yotsuda said. “Kenny Endo has mentored and nurtured Taiko Kauai from the group’s infancy, and has shared a wide variety of community performances.”
“Jeff Peterson has been a favorite artist at E Kanikapila Kakou,” Yotsuda said. “He has graced Kauai’s stages with so many different artists.
“Dr. Riley Lee has performed for many of the annual Pilgrimage of Compassion that take place at the Lawai International Center, and various community performances,” Yotsuda said. “This Island Breeze performance on Saturday is like a ‘homecoming’ for all three musicians.”
The Island Breeze concert is sponsored by the Garden Island Arts Council with help from Taiko Kauai —”bringing arts to the people, and people to the arts.”
