PUHI — A teacher rushed in with a box of food on Friday as the Island School Student Council set up a collection of food to turn over to the Kauai Independent Food Bank.
With the guidance of Island School teachers Shantelle Shimogawa and Caitlin Kaaihue, the Student Council representing grades kindergarten through fifth turned over a total of 2,133 pounds of food that was collected from Monday to Friday morning.
The total also encompassed food students brought to the Kauai Independent Food Bank. That visit gave student representatives an enlightening experience as they learned what is involved in getting food to the people who need the help.
KIFB executive director Kelvin Moniz was impressed with how much the student representatives remembered from their mid-week field trip to the Nawiliwili food bank facility.
“Every little bit helps,” Moniz said. “Yes, that’s true. And we can always use your eyes and ears, and your teachers’ eyes, to help find people who need some help, but are not getting help. If you know of someone, let us know. We can put together a box of food, and you can help get it to them.”
Moniz also told the children that during the holidays, as many people celebrate with food, the demand for extra food also raises.
He said KIFB just got a phone call from the middle and high school side of Island School, whose students also want to plan a food drive.
“We can always use food,” Moniz said. “And remember, every little bit helps.”
