“After nearly seven months, the investigation into two of the retaliation complaints filed against me have concluded. The outcome confirmed what I stated publicly in April: I did not, and do not retaliate against my employees. Furthermore, it would be ludicrous for me to retaliate against my employees for an incident I self-reported in a timely manner to the police commission before any complaint was filed against me.

Previous complaints made against me have been presented to the media prior to me being notified of the allegations and an investigation being completed. This practice has not afforded me due process and appears to be intended to create public shame and exert political pressure on me.
I recognize that public scrutiny is part of being a public official. However, it is unfair for my family to continue bearing the emotional burdens resulting from individuals with agendas attacking my reputation and making false claims against me. For this reason alone, I have decided to retire from law enforcement.
All complaints should be taken seriously, and retaliation should never be tolerated against employees or their supervisors. I respect the investigative process and appreciate the effort that has been put into uncovering the truth.
Today, I accepted notice and received from the Police Commission a three-day suspension related to the failure to properly secure my firearm on Police Department property. As previously stated, I accept full responsibility for my actions.
Some of my most valuable lessons in life have been learned through my mistakes. I hope that others have learned the importance of properly securing firearms from my experience.
I would like to thank the Police Commission for their confidence and support of my leadership. Contrary to any speculation, I was not asked or forced to retire, nor did I announce my retirement to escape any investigation or discipline.
I am confident that the leaders within the KPD will continue to work diligently to improve the services we provide to our employees and the community. I will continue to offer the necessary leadership and support for the remainder of my time with the department.”
