KILAUEA — A 62-year-old visitor from New York was pulled from the water off Kauapea Beach on the North Shore earlier this week.
On Tuesday, Oct. 22, first responders with the Hanalei Fire Station were dispatched to Kauapea Beach in Kilauea at approximately 11:15 a.m. for an unresponsive swimmer. He was pulled from the water by bystanders, who administered CPR on the man.
Once on the scene, fire crews took command and immediately responded by placing an automated external defibrillator and a mechanical chest compressor device on the unresponsive swimmer.
Fire personnel then transported the victim to awaiting medics, who took over advanced resuscitation efforts while transporting him to the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital in Kapaa, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. However, no foul play is suspected.
Volunteers with Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, were contacted to offer support to the victim’s family.
The incident marked Kauai’s 9th water-related death this year. Ocean officials remind beachgoers that Kauapea Beach is not lifeguarded and strongly recommend only swimming at beaches with lifeguards.
