Magdalena Layaoen Parubrub
Magdalena Layaoen Parubrub, of Koloa, passed away on Sept. 20, 2024, at the age of 101. She was born on Oct. 14, 1922, in Baay, Butac, Ilocos Norte,Philippines. She was a housewife.
She was preceded in death by husband Restitato Gado Parubrub, daughter Rebecca P. Dela Cruz, son Noel Layaoen, parents Genaro and Anastacia Layaoen, brothers Jose L. Layaoen and Efren B. Layaoen.
She is survived by sons Henry (Ederline) Parubrub of Kekaha, Dusty (Pamela) Parubrub of Koloa, Wilber (Denise) Parubrub of Kekaha, daughter Lily Millare of Eleele, 20 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, brother Mac (Delly) Layaoen of Koloa, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, at the Garden Island Mortuary in Lawai. Visitation from 2 to 3 p.m., followed by a celebration of life at 3 p.m. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Layne Katsumi Shigeta
Layne Katsumi Shigeta, of Lihue, passed away on Oct. 8, 2024, at the age of 68. He was born on June 1, 1956, in Lihue. He was a Kauai Branch Administrator for the State Department of Human Services Vocational Rehabilitation Division.
He was loved by many throughout the state, especially by colleagues and clients as an administrator, senior counselor, and social worker. He was a graduate of Kauai High School Class of 74. To his family, he was the central force of love and care.
Preceded in death by father Yukio Shigeta.
He is survived by wife Linda Shigeta, sons Noah (Rebekah) Osborn, Nicholas “Nick” Kealii Shigeta, mother Alice Shigeta, brothers Daryl (Martha) Shigeta, Tyler (Rosie) Shigeta, Donn Shigeta, grandchildren Christine Pelez-Osborn, Lutecia Osborn, aunts Kikuno Shigeta-Wakumoto, Esther Makanae Shigeta, Jean Kanemoto Hamura and uncle Donald Kanemoto.
Out of deepest respect for Laynes spoken and written wishes no funeral will be held.

Wayne Ajimura
Wayne Ajimura, of Hanapepe, passed away on Sept. 8, 2024, at the age of 76. He was born on Sept. 26, 1947, in Lihue. He retired from the U.S. Army and was a self-proprietor.
He was preceded in death by father Masaichi Ajimura, daughter Sharon Ajimura, sisters Vickie Ajimura, Shelly Kabat and brother Alvin Ajimura.
He is survived by daughters Janel Ajimura of Hawaii Island, Mackenzie Ajimura of Lanai, grandchildren Justin Paaaina, Jaylin Paaaina, mother Yuriko Ajimura of Hanapepe, brother Clyde (Dominga) Ajimura of Hanapepe, sisters Lynn Viquelia of Mission Viejo, California, Mary Ajimura of Gardena, California, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe starting at 11 a.m.

Albert John Souza
Al “Johnny” Souza passed away on Sept. 8, 2024. He was born on Oct. 6, 1964, in Kauai, Hawaii. He was a retired CEO and independent consultant for medical services in California. He recently moved back to his home in Kauai.
Albert was preceded in death by daughter Anna Krystela Souza and father Albert Souza.
He is survived by mother Mildred “Millie” Souza, sister Margaret (Gerry Riopta) Souza, two very special nieces Brianna Kaneshiro, Alyssa Kaneshiro, children Johnny Souza, Millie Gissel Souza, Liliana Souza, Cindy Frausto, Jessica Alvarez and two grandchildren.
Family and friends on Kauai are welcome to reach out to mom Millie or sister Margaret, as services will only be held in California at a later date, where he will be put to final rest.
Tamar Kamala Mersberg
Tamar Kamala Mersberg passed away in Anahola, Kauai, on Sept. 27, 2024, surrounded by her ‘Ohana at the age of 81. Born on Sept. 12, 1943, in Honolulu, Oahu. She retired from the County of Kauai.
Preceded in death by husband Lawrence K. “Joe” Mersberg, father Arthur K. DeFries, mother Tamara K. Kaneali‘i DeFries, sons Nathan A. “Kaiza” Mersberg and Lawrence K. “Duna” Mersberg, daughter Jennifer Pua Manu, brothers Arthur K. DeFries and Gaylord K. DeFries, and sister Annalene K. Spencer.
Survived by son Arthur K. (Naomi) Mersberg, daughter Priscilla U. (John) Mersberg-Kloes, brothers David K. (Sandra) DeFries and Roland N. (Kari) DeFries, sister Edie DeFries, grandchildren Kunane (Kristalyn) Mersberg, Ioane Mersberg-Kloes, Makanani Mersberg, Kapuaonaona Mersberg, Kaleionaona Mersberg, Cody Mersberg, Joshua Mersberg, great-grandchildren Kaikunane Mersberg, Nyla Mersberg, daughters-in-law Karen Doiron, Nani Maka Valpoon, son-in-law Sosefo Manu, sisters-in-law Val (Fred) Wong, Rose Angeles, Stephanie Saffery, as well as numerous aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services will be held on Nov. 1, 2024, at Kapaa First Hawaiian Church. Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m., service at 10:30 a.m., and burial will follow at Kapaa, Kealia Cemetery.
