KAPAA — Island School boys runners were happy on Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation cross-country races held on the campus of Kapaa High School.
Under a quickly warming morning sun, Voyager runners Khyler Greenleaf and Spencer Cook each broke the 18-minute mark. Greenleaf stopped the clocks at 17 minutes, 32.04 seconds for first overall, followed by Cook at 17:44.84.
Additionally, in the absence of Kauai High School runner Kobe Claussen, the Voyagers placed its top five scoring runners in the top 10 to capture first place honors at 29 points. The Saturday race was the first time in three races Island School boys topped the results.
Kauai High School boys, with its first finisher Cassius Olson crossing the finish line in fourth of the 75-runner field, overall, placed its top five scoring runners in the top 11 for second place at 41 points.
Cedric Crampton-Nabaa was the first Waimea boys to finish, crossing the line third overall on a run that stopped the clocks at 18:04.42. The remaining scoring Menehune finished in the top 24 for 70 points and third place.
Host Kapaa High School boys placed its scoring runners in the top 21 for 82 points and fourth place.
On the girls course, host Kapaa High School wahine continued their cluster running and placed the top five scoring runners in the top 9 spots for 29 points and first place. Kapa’a’s first wahine runner, Wainohia Kitamura, led the pack by finishing third overall with a 21:44.74 run.
Kauai High School runner Aileah Villatora continued to lead the field, stopping the clocks at 20:32.68. However, the four other scoring Red Raiders runners finished in 13th to 17th places to place Kauai girls in third place with 61 points.
Island School runner Ashlyn Worley stopped the clocks in second place overall at 21:31.32. The remaining scoring Voyager girls finished in the top 15 to give Island School girls 41 points and second place honors in the race that featured 42 runners.
The Waimea High School girls were led by Taylee Yamamoto, who crossed 18th overall on a 27:15.95 run. The Menehune wahine collected 110 points for fourth place honors.
The next KIF cross-country meet is on Saturday, hosted by Kauai High School at the Kauai Community College. The first race is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
