There are only two days remaining in September, and the Kauai Committee on the Status of Women invites everyone to join them and other community sponsors like the YWCA of Kauai and the Zonta Club of Kauai to welcome October with a sign waving event at the front of the Kauai Community College on Tuesday (that’s Oct. 1) afternoon from 4 p.m. (if you don’t pau hana until 4:30 or 5, just come afterward because the group will be there until at least 5:30 p.m.). The sign waving recognizes October as Breast Cancer Month and joins the numerous other community groups (the Kauai Pop Warner Football League participants — both tackle football and cheer — wear pink through the month, and last year Waimea High School girls volleyball created special pink uniforms and cheer squad members from the three public high schools donned special pink ribbon hairpieces in October) to raise awareness and gain support for the fight against breast cancer.

There is still time to enjoy the final day of the Kauai Mokihana Festival presented by the Malie Foundation at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall. The craft fair component (Tara Arume-Nitta of Hapa is hoping her fish arrive in time for Matsuri) opens at 10 a.m. with two lunch wagons. The final day of hula competition featuring auana starts from 11 a.m.
Kudos to Pastor Vil Galiza, Alfred Sarmiento of Hawaii Christian Voters, the Kauai Island Ministries and all of their hands in hosting the Candidate Meet and Greet that filled the Kauai Philippine Cultural Center with nearly 200 voters (the Elections Table volunteer said during the primary election, Christian voters accounted for 12 percent of the votes cast), and candidates for offices ranging from congressional to local council, and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
