LIHUE — The Kauai Mokihana Festival presented by the Malie Foundation starts on Sunday, Sept. 22, with a Hawaiian church service at 10 a.m. at Kapaa First Hawaiian Church.
The event is a wee-long “contemporary Hawaiian cultural festival” that features a variety of activities ranging from educational presentations and lectures to music and a hula competition. Most of the events have an admission fee with proceeds benefiting the Malie Foundation and its scholarship program.
On Monday, Sept. 23, the annual Composers Contest and Concert will take place at the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
On Tuesday morning, Sept. 24, participating schools will engage in Eo E Liliu Song Competition.
Kauhane Morton will lead an Oeoe Workshop in the evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort with an admission of $20 presale and $25 at the door.
Morton will also host a Hokiokio Workshop on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort with an admission of $20 advance and $25 at the door.
Kumu Kuualohanui Kaulia will lead a Iliili Hula Workshop as a preface to the two-day hula competition on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort with a $20 presale admission. Tickets are $25 at the door.
The Mokihana Festival will present its annual hula competition at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall with its accompanying free craft fair and food offerings on Friday, Sept. 27, and Saturday, Sept. 28. The craft fair and food starts at 10 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
The Sept. 27 competition will see a field of about a dozen halau competing in Kahiko Nei hula with a $25 advance admission. Tickets are available at the door for $30 for the show that starts at 5 p.m.
The festival wraps up with the Auana hula competition that starts at 11 a.m. on Sept. 28. Tickets are $25 advance, but will also be available at the door for $30.
