KAPAA— An evening structure fire on Kauai’s Eastside prompted the partial closure of Ulu Street on Tuesday.
The Kauai Fire Department (KFD) reports that firefighters with the Kapaa, Koloa, Lihue, and Kaiakea Fire Stations responded to an emergency 911 call for a structure fire on Ulu Street in Kapaa shortly before 9:50 p.m. on Monday, September 16.
Fire crews including the on-duty Battalion Chief arrived on the scene and witnessed the two-story structure building occupied by Kauai Marine &Mower store engulfed in flames. Due to the unstable condition of the structure, and with public safety concerns in mind, fire personnel closed Ulu Street from Kukui Street to Kao Street.
In attendance due to the immediate shut off of the structure’s electrical utilities were Kauai Island Utility Cooperative and the Kauai Police Department (KPD). Once firefighters controlled the blaze and extinguished the fire, the KFD Fire Prevention Bureau took command of the scene and conducted their investigation.
Fire investigators cleared the scene shortly after 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday and reported that there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation with the damages to the structure and its contents estimated at 1.2 million dollars.
Ulu Street will be temporarily closed until further notice. Motorists and pedestrians are urged to avoid the area. Any individual with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call KPD dispatch at 808-241-1711
