MOLOAA — Law enforcement responded to a traffic collision, which prompted the closure of Kuhio Highway in Moloaa on early Sunday morning.
The Kauai Police Department (KPD) said on Sept. 8, at approximately 1:55 a.m., a sedan was traveling southbound on Kuhio Highway when it collided with a pickup truck.
The pickup truck was also traveling southbound when it was rear-ended while attempting to make a left hand turn onto Ko’olau Road next to the Moloaa Fruit Stand.
First responders arrived on the scene and located the pickup truck on the higway’s shoulder northbound of Kuhio Highway with an underage driver and passenger inside.
Kuhio Highway was closed in both directions for approximately three hours while investigators with KPD’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation. Speed and impairment do appear to be factors in the crash.
The underage driver of the sedan did not report any injuries and was detained for the offense of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and negligent injury in the first degree. The underage driver was later released pending further investigation.
