WAIMEA — A fire caused an estimated $22,500 in damage on Sunday, Aug. 11.
Kaua‘i Fire Department (KFD) personnel with the Waimea and Hanapepe fire stations were dispatched after a 911 emergency call was received shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday about a storage shed fire on Nima Place in Waimea.
According to a preliminary report, firefighters arrived on the scene and discovered a 10-foot by 20-foot structure with smoke coming out through the windows. Prior to the arrival of KFD personnel, bystanders took action and used a fire extinguisher along with some water hoses to slow the spread of the fire.
Once KFD personnel arrived on scene, they took command of the scene and used tank water to knock down the fire through the windows before entering the shed, where they successfully extinguished the remaining fire and hot spots.
Inspectors with the Kaua‘i Fire Prevention Bureau also arrived on scene and estimated the damage to the shed and its contents was approximately $22,500. The cause of the fire was deemed accidental due to equipment malfunction.
The scene was cleared at 3:30 p.m. No injuries reported.
