PUHI — The Kaua‘i Master Gardener program, in conjunction with Grove Farm Market, will be presenting another of its “backyard garden demonstrations” on Saturday at the Grove Farm Market’s Arts and Crafts Fair.
Starting from 9:30 a.m. at the Kaua‘i Master Gardener tent area, the topic will be garden pests. Roshan Manandhar, of the University of Hawai‘i College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, will led the demonstration.
Manandhar is an entomologist. He received his bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Mathematics and Physics at Tribhuvan University in Nepal, and a bachelor’s degree in Entomology, Pathology, and Nematology at Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology in India. He also earned a master’s degree in entomology, and a Ph.D. in entomology from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
Manandhar will respond to questions regarding pests that plague backyard gardeners. The Master Gardeners suggest that samples of infected plants, such as roots, leaves, branches and insects themselves, be brought to the demonstration in sealed plastic bags for inspection and discussion.
Additionally, Manandhar will be doing a presentation on fruit fly management and encourage people interested to bring a clear, gallon-sized clear water bottle for a do-it-yourself activity.
Grove Farm Market, sponsored by the Grove Farm Company, runs every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Puhi park open field located behind the Harley Davidson store. The Arts and Crafts Fair component that attracts upward of three dozen vendors, is added to the fair on the first Saturday of even-numbered months.
