LIHU‘E — The Transportation Security Administration is looking for a few good people to help bolster its ranks at Lihu‘e Airport, where thousands of tourists arrive every week for the start of their Kaua‘i experience.
As a result, a pair of job fairs are being held in July and August in hopes of encouraging some local residents to join the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on a part- or full-time basis.
The starting pay is slightly north of $60,000 per year for full-time workers, plus full federal benefits. TSA is also offering a hiring incentive of $2,000 for all new employees. The hiring incentive is payable in two installments — one payment when starting with the federal agency and the other after one year on the job.
The agency is hoping the combination of factors will lead to a new slate of transportation security officers at the airport.
“When it comes to hiring we know that it is better for our entire operation when the people we hire are local, they’re members of this community. They’re going to work with other members of the community and they are going to be screening the travelers who either live here or have been on vacation here, and that just makes for an overall better operation,” said Lorie Dankers of TSA Public Affairs during a recent media tour of the agency’s operations at the airport.
“And that’s why we are encouraging local members of the community to consider working at TSA and joining our team. It’s really a second to none benefits package and a wage that is very competitive.”
The first hiring event will be held on Wednesday, July 31, at TSA administrative offices at 4280 Rice St., Lihu‘e. The second hiring event will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at the same location. Free, on-site parking will be available.
Applicants must be 18 years old. Applicants should plan to be at the hiring event for approximately three hours.
Applicants need to bring two forms of identification — one to establish identity and the other to establish proof of U.S. citizenship of U.S. national. Applicants should also bring a smartphone or similar device in order to access personal email.
New hires will attend a paid, two-week standard training program with other recently hired transportation security officers from around the country.
