KOLOA — A hit-and-run victim has died about three months after she was struck while walking along Waila‘au Road in Koloa.
The family of Laurie Segawa, 72, said she succumbed to her injuries on Saturday, July 13, at Castle Hospital on O‘ahu.
The Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) reported back on April 15, 2024, that at around 6:30 a.m. Segawa was on her daily walk eastbound on Waila‘au Road, about two blocks from her home, when she was hit by an unknown vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle fled after striking Segawa and before the arrival of first responders. Witnesses described the vehicle as a dark-colored, full-size pickup truck.
Her son David Gilland spoke with The Garden Island back in April and said that his mother was left with severe injuries and had to be airlifted to the Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu, where she underwent several surgeries.
Segawa is survived by her husband Richard, two sons Chris and David, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The family is urging whoever hit Segawa to come forward and take responsibility for their actions.
A GoFundMe account has been established to assist the Segawa family with expenses. The account can be found at gofund.me/a0a2d16d.
The Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) continues to investigate the case. Anyone with any information regarding the incident is asked to call KPD Dispatch at 808-241-1711. People who wish to remain anonymous can call CrimeStoppers Kaua‘i at 808-246-8300.
