LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Filipino Women’s Club and the Kauai Pangasinan Association honored five students with scholarships during the organization’s get-together at the Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center on Sunday.
LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Filipino Women’s Club and the Kauai Pangasinan Association honored five students with scholarships during the organization’s get-together at the Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center on Sunday.
Barbara Green and Marie Mendaro, representing the presidency of both clubs, awarded a total of $7,500 in scholarships to the five students. Green said the Kaua‘i Filipino Women’s Club contributed $1,000 awards and the Kaua‘i Pangasinan Association added $500 scholarships.
Three boys and two girls were recipients of the scholarship awards. Named recipients are Sophia Badua, Erika Gandia, Adrianne James Ruz, Benedict Uri and Ian Garces, who was represented by his mother, Efreline Garces.
A major portion of the scholarship funds are derived from the Kaua‘i Filipino Women’s Club presentation of the Terno Ball, which is an evening of Filipino culture, competition and an opportunity for an elegant night out.
Green announced that the 58th annual Terno Ball will take place on Sept. 21 at the Royal Sonesta Kaua‘i Resort ballroom where prejudging will take place from 5:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m.
“Not only does this beloved event enable us to continue awarding scholarships to our graduating high school seniors, but it also brings our community together in celebration of our Filipino formal wear,” Green said.
