LIHU‘E — More than 338 pounds of food and $110 in monetary contributions were collected on Saturday during the 19th annual Kaua‘i Classic Cars Dad’s Day car show, which filled the parking lot on the east end parking lot fronting the UPS store.
“That’s a lot of food,” said Cyndi Ayonon, who is a member of the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank board. “A lot of the cars that showed up had food packed in their car trunks. They didn’t have to contribute, but they wanted to.”
Harvey Maeda of the Kaua‘i Classic Cars said the Saturday event, the 19th year they’ve been hosting the car show, featured a lot of cars that came out because there was no rain.
“This is pretty good,” Maeda said. “There are a lot of cars out there. I’m glad it’s not raining. I even saw the Volkswagen club on the road, and they said they would come for a little while, but had to leave early.”
A car show vendor, Metalhaus in the Puhi Industrial Park, added more cars with his display of die cast and Hot Wheels models.
“Selling car care products is too hard at these shows,” the Metalhaus crew said. “These die cast and small cars are the rage, now.
The popularity of the tiny cars will have Metalhaus hosting its Hot Wheels and Die Cast Show on Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon at its shop in the Puhi Industrial Park, located adjacent to Natural Pet Hawai‘i, and across from Mark’s Place. Vendors are welcome by calling Thomas at 808-652-3671 or Mike at 808-652-7047 for more information.
DeeJay Marv de Vera could not help but join DJ Rasay in spinning tunes appropriate for the range of classic cars, Volkswagen, and even bikes that came to show.
The pair of deejays were joined by Frank Cruz and Cruz Control providing live entertainment inside the shopping center where the K+M pop-up offered vendors presenting Dad’s Day themed merchandise for the crowd that spilled over from the King’s Parade and ho‘olaule‘a presented by the King Kamehameha Celebration Commission.
“And, you haven’t gone to the Kaua‘i Police Activities League flag football at the Vidinha Stadium parking lot?” a car enthusiast asked. “They had Touch A Truck last week.”
