WAILUA — Professional Golf Association pro Darrell Rego of the Wailua Golf Course inaugurated the “Bucket for Fun” campaign in April. The campaign was a food drive, which allowed Wailua Golf Course patrons to donate to the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i through a collection bucket in the Pro Shop.
Rego and the Wailua Golf Course recently donated $1,766 to the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i, which represented the proceeds of the monthlong campaign.
“For Kaua‘i’s own PGA pro Darrell Rego, the community is as vital as the perfect swing,” said Tisha Remegio, the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i Impact Manager. “This past April, Darrell launched ‘Bucket Up for Fun,’ a campaign that teed off with a heartfelt mission to support Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i, and the families it serves.”
The financial contribution equates to 3,797 meals for Kaua‘i’s hungry families.
“Darrell, deeply connected to the Garden Island, recognizes the significance of community backing,” Remigio said. “Throughout April, the Wailua Pro Shop donated $1 from every bucket of golf balls sold. This generous initiative underscores Darrell’s belief in giving back to the island he calls home.”
Remigio said Rego’s dedication goes beyond philanthropy and the golf course greens.
“Passionate about nurturing young talent, Darrell leads the popular Summer Golf Program that is offered by the County of Kaua‘i through the Department of Parks and Recreation,” Remigio said. “This program provides keiki, ages 7 through 15, the chance to learn valuable skills and develop a love for the game.”
Registration for the Summer Golf Program is scheduled to take place on Monday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wailua Golf Course Pro Shop. Due to its popularity and limited class sizes, interested parties are encouraged to sign up, early.
“Darrell’s commitment both on and off the course embodies the spirit of aloha, making Kaua‘i not just a place, but a community,” Remigio said. “His efforts ensure that the island’s residents can thrive, whether they’re enjoying a meal or perfecting their swing.”
