LIHU‘E — Kapa‘a High School track and field athlete broke two Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation records and Waimea High School’s Aliyah Taba snapped another pair of records during the Central Pacific Bank Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation track and field finals.
Led by the record-breaking performance of Burkhart, the Kapa‘a High School team earned the overall championship with 398 points garnered over the two days ending on Friday night, April 26.
Island School finished second with 250 points, followed by Waimea High School earning 189 points and Kaua‘i High School with 136 points.
On the boys side, Burkhart’s record-breaking performance helped the Warriors earn the team category with 256 points over Island School with 101 points. Kaua‘i High School finished with 70 points over Waimea with 59 points.
In the girls arena, Island School edged out Kapa‘a High School 149 to 142. Waimea girls finished in third place with 130 points, followed by Kaua‘i High School with 66 points.
Nash lost little time breaking the KIF record when his long jump saw the record crumble on leap of 23 feet, 10.25 inches that earned him the gold medal in the event. It was also longer than the 22 foot, 6 inch leap he posted earlier in the season that earned him top ranking in the state qualifying times.
The running events had yet to reach the starting gun testing phase when Nash crashed the second KIF record with a leap of 6 feet, 6 inches in the high jump for another gold medal.
Joining Nash in record books, Waimea High School athlete Aliyah Taba cracked the KIF record during the preliminary run of the 300 meter hurdles. She came back in the finals with a better time of 45.81 seconds to earn gold, nearly three seconds ahead of fellow Menehune Kendra Knapp.
In the vein of record breaking, Kapa‘a’s Kanoe Haneberg could only attend one of the two nights of the track and field finals. That was enough to have her clear the girls high jump bar at 5 feet, 2 inches for gold and hearty cheer from the coaches. Egged by the encouragement of team mates and coaches, Haneberg went on to clear 5’6” before falling short at 5’8.”
In addition to competing for CPB KIF gold, the athletes continued to vie for a state qualifying consideration. The latest athletes earning consideration based on the April 22 results posted to the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association website follows.
The 2024 Island Movers HHSAA track and field championships will unfold at Mililani High School on O‘ahu on May 10 and 11.
