LIHU‘E — As part of a national 15th-year initiative, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Kaua‘i law enforcement are partnering up for National Drug Take Back Day.
The initiative is coordinated by the DEA and focuses on providing a safe, convenient and responsible method of disposing of medications, while educating individuals about the potential of abuse and the consequences of improper storage disposal.
Prescriptions and non-prescriptions, such as tablet pills, capsules, liquids, patches and other forms of medications will be accepted. New or used needles and syringes will noy be accepted.
The event will take place on Saturday, April 27, and will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) headquarters at 3990 Ka‘ana St. in Lihu‘e.
Anyone unable to participate in the National Drug Take Back event can visit KPD headquarters at any time and anonymously drop off unused or expired medication via the permanently installed medication dropbox.
The DEA’s Drug Take Back Initiative has resulted in the collection of more than 53,000 pounds of prescription medications. In October 2023, more than 3,400 pounds of unused medication was willingly turned in by Hawai‘i residents at collection sites througout the state.
