Frances Kay Foster

Frances Kay Foster, of Kapa‘a, passed away in Lihu‘e on March 12, 2024, at the age of 80. Frances was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on June 19, 1943. She was raised in Fort Worth, Texas. She received her undergraduate degree at Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas State University) and her Master’s degree at Texas Christian University. Fran moved to Arlington, Texas, and taught high school English at South Grand Prairie High School.

In 1991, Fran moved to Kaua‘i where she was a teacher and a guidance counselor at Kapa‘a High School. She took a personal interest in the students that she came to know at the high school. Fran always told people back home that she moved to Kaua‘i for the flowers. She loved to take care of her collection of orchids on her lanai.

Her family enjoyed visiting her on Kaua‘i and she loved how much her family and friends enjoyed the beauty of the island. She could not wait for a recap of the day’s adventures, especially when sunny Po‘ipu always came through on rainy days. Fran was curious about the lives of people she interacted with, would ask questions about their situations and often had advice for how to solve their problems.

She is preceded in passing by her parents Travis and Nancy Foster and her brother Travis Vincent Foster.

Frances is survived by her daughters Amy (Bobby) Newberry of Liberty, Missouri, Meredith Foster of Rockport, Texas, her sister Judith Foster of Carrollton, Texas, her sister-in-law Susan Cannon of Corrales, New Mexico, her grandchildren Clay (Hannah) Newberry of Blue Springs, Missouri, Brenna Newberry of Honolulu, Hawai‘i, as well as her nieces Lindsey Richardson (Todd Slavinsky) of Carrollton, Texas and Kelsey (Paul) Jendrzey of Lubbock, Texas.

Alan Baldwin King

November 13, 1960 — March 5, 2024

Alan Baldwin King, 63, of Kalaheo, Hawai‘i, died peacefully on March 5, 2024, after a brief and valiant battle with lung cancer. Alan was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the youngest child of Ralph and Jane King. He spent his high school years at St. Edward’s School in Vero Beach, Florida, graduated from Dartmouth College in 1983, and was a proud member of Gamma Delta Chi fraternity. Alan moved to Maui in 1983 to work for Alexander & Baldwin in Diversified Agriculture. In 1986, he transferred to Kaua‘i and was an instrumental member of the team at McBryde Sugar Plantation that imported coffee seeds, grew seedlings, and planted the millions of coffee trees that make up the current Kaua‘i Coffee Company plantation.

In 1987, Alan married Monica (Latini) at Keawalai Congregational Church in Makena, Maui. Alan retired from agriculture upon the arrival of their first son, Andrew, in 2000. Three years later, son Maximilian was born. Alan devoted his time to his family and community. With a huge heart and generous spirit, he dedicated himself to making Kaua‘i a better place. He served on local nonprofit boards including the Wilcox Health Foundation, Island School, Kaua‘i Junior Golf Association, Kukuiolono Golf Course, and the Mission Children’s Society, and coached high school golf at Waimea High School and Island School.

Alan’s greatest loves were his family, his community, his pets, and plants. He enjoyed golfing, working in his yard, and spending summers with his family and friends on Peaks Island, Maine. Wherever he was, Alan reached out to those around him and shared his positivity, kindness and insight. Whether working to find viable crops to keep Kaua‘i green, co-chairing an island fund-raiser, or helping make education and sports more accessible to island youth, Alan was there, with his contagious smile and an overabundant willingness to help. His generosity and commitment to the betterment of his two island communities will be greatly missed.

Alan is survived by his wife and best friend Monica, sons Andrew and Maximilian, sister Lindsay (Craig) Rahl, brothers Ralph (Leslie Chin) King, Douglas King, sister-in-law Lisa (Dave) Kirkendall and his much loved godchildren, nieces and nephews, and their families.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Alan at Kukuiolono Golf Course Clubhouse in Kalaheo on Saturday, May 11 at 2 p.m.

Edmund F. Ku Malama Sr.

Edmund F. Ku Malama Sr., age 81, of Kekaha, Kaua‘i, died in Hospice Care in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, on Feb. 17, 2024. He was born in Waimea, Kaua‘i, worked for Iron Workers Union and owned Ed’s Welding.

He was preceded in death by his wife Gloria Albarado Malama, son Edmund Malama Jr., parents Joseph Ku and Lucille Malama, sisters Elaine Parker, Bluebell Kaowili, Alma Nerez, Barbara Westerdale, Florence Ilae, Abigail Estacio, brothers Joseph Malama Jr., Vernon Malama, Llewellyn Malama and PaddyBoy Malama.

Survived by Moopuna Roslyn (Jesse) Cummings of Kalaheo, Brandon (Karen Gray) Malama of ‘Ele‘ele, Shandiin (Chad) Valmoja of Kalaheo, Kaliko Waahila of Phoenix, Arizona, Moopuna nui Jaidalyn, Ryder, Madison, Hunter, Maddox, Noah, Luke Cummings, Kyla, Brynn, Kenna, Brody Malama, Kenzie, Kaizely, Kaizen, Kyler Valmoja, brother Billy (Leona) Malama of Oregon, sisters-in-law Pinky Malama of Kekaha, Joyce (Danny) Tomas of Lihu‘e, Lorraine Albarado of O‘ahu, brother-in-law Jerry (Ellen) Albarado of Hanapepe, numerous nieces and nephews.

Services on April 6, 2024, at 11 a.m., followed by a luncheon and scattering at Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor, located at 8932 Kekaha Road in Kekaha.

Florentino Salvador, Sr.

Florentino Salvador, Sr., of Kilauea, passed away on Feb. 13, 2024, at Wilcox Hospital at the age of 91. He was born on Nov. 24, 1932, in Hanalei. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a plant seed operator of Lihu‘e Plantation.

He was preceded in death by father Hilario Salvador, mother Irene Salvador, son Neil Salvador, brothers William, Bonafacio and Nicholas Salvador.

He is survived by wife Eliza Salvador of Kilauea, son Florentino Salvador, Jr. of Kilauea, daughters Janet (Bart) Ovalles of Kilauea, Peggy (Eddie Espina) Salvador of Kilauea, six grandchildren, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the Kilauea St. Sylvester. Visitation is from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by Mass at 10 a.m. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Wiley Kaipolani Junjiro Bernard Yoshioka

Wiley Kaipolani Junjiro Bernard Yoshioka, of Lihu‘e, passed away on March 8, 2024, at the age of 32. He was born on Nov. 28, 1991. He was a lead pipe fitter for the County of Kaua‘i, Department of Water.

He was preceded in death by grandparents Jitsuo and Theresa Yoshioka and Bernard and Violet Almarza.

He is survived by parents Darin Ipo and Sandra Yoshioka, brothers Micah Yoshioka of Lihu‘e, Hunter Yoshioka of Lihu‘e, Kobi Yoshioka of Lihu‘e, numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

Service information will be provided at a later date.

Violet M. Moura

Violet M. Moura, 90, of ‘Ele‘ele, passed away on March 2, 2024. She was born in ‘Ele‘ele on June 13, 1933, and was a nurse at ‘Ele‘ele Dispensary.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Wallace F. Moura, her parents William and Mary Reis, sisters Alfreda and Mabel, brothers Adam, Harry and Alfred.

She is survived by daughter Joan Moura, sons Gary and Robert, brother Thomas Reis, sisters-in-law Janet Reis (Adam), Frances Frietas (Joe), Dorothy Moura (Albert), six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, niece Shirley Laguatan, nephew John Medeiros, among numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her celebration of life is Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary in Koloa. Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m., Rosary at 10 a.m., and service at 10:45 a.m. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Betty June Bell

Betty June Bell passed away on Feb. 18, 2024, in Lihu‘e at the age of 96. She was born on May 22, 1927, in Indiana. She was a licensed Pharmacist who graduated from Purdue University, a Hospital Administrator for Wilcox Hospital, a Real Estate Broker, and the owner of PSS Realty.

Betty was an example of love, kindness, and generosity for all who knew her. She was always a strong advocate for women, and prior to her death, she established the Betty Bell Kaua‘i Women’s Scholarship Fund through the Hawai‘i Community Foundation.

She was preceded in death by parents Herman and Hazel Bell.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Lihu‘e United Church in Lihu‘e. Services will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a social gathering at the Parish Hall at noon.

Betty requested that her friends make a donation to The Betty Bell Kaua‘i Woman’s Scholarship Fund, the Lihu‘e United Church, or Hospice in lieu of flowers.

Delfin Cabot Jr.

Delfin Cabot Jr., age 77, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2024, in Downey, California. He was born on Oct. 9, 1946, at Santa Maria, Iloco Sur, Philippines, to Delfin Cabot Sr. and Sabina Cabot. Delfin grew up in Puhi, Kaua‘i (old sugar camp). He loved playing the trumpet and was on the Kaua‘i High School Marching Band. He graduated class of 1964, leaving Kaua‘i to attend college in Los Angeles under a music scholarship.

Delfin is survived by his spouse Lourdes. Along with five boys, Tim (Tanya), Duane, Jeremy (Bianca), Greg (Joyce), Marvin (Lynnett). Siblings, Gilbert (Joni), Edwin (Alma), Elsie (James Walker, deceased).

Julia Nanae Kobayashi

July 11, 1939 — January 4, 2024

Julia Nanae Kobayashi, 84, of Lihu‘e, passed away on Jan. 4, 2024. She was born in Honolulu on July 11, 1939. After 31 years (1969-2000) Julia retired from First Hawaiian Bank.

Julia was preceded in death by her husband Tatsuo Kobayashi, parents Masao Sakai, Gladys Shigeno (Onzuka) Sakai, her sisters Hazel Kikue Fitzgerald, Ethel Masae Okada and her brother Harold Shigeo Sakai.

Julia is survived by her sons Duke Kobayashi of Lihu‘e, Lance (Lisa) Kobayashi of Honolulu, daughters Tammy of Lihu‘e, Darlene (Chris) Reed of Fullerton, California, brother Denny Masami (Arleen) Sakai of Lihu‘e, granddaughters Amanda Kobayashi, Kiana and Nalani Reed and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private ceremony was held at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Lihu‘e.

Jane Reiko Uyema

Jane Reiko Uyema, 84, of Honolulu, passed away on Feb. 14, 2024, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was born on Feb. 9, 1940, in Waimea, Kaua‘i. She was a retired teacher/librarian.

She was preceded in death by parents Harry and Yuriko Saito and brother Donald Saito.

She is survived by husband Harry Uyema, children Kimberly Hose (Ray), Myles Uyema (Kelly), grandchild Dawson Hose, sisters Janice Kaneshiro, Effie Shimabukuro and brother Terence Saito.

A service is Friday, March 29, 2024, at Borthwick Mortuary on O‘ahu. Visitation begins at 4 p.m., followed by service at 5 p.m. The family requests casual or aloha attire.

Teresa Marie Brofka

Teresa Marie Brofka, of Lihu‘e, passed away on March 3, 2024, at the age of 74. She was born in Waukegan, Illinois, on Aug. 16, 1949, and worked as a security officer at Nawiliwili Harbor.

She was preceded in passing by her loving husband of 31 years, Dennis Marugame and parents Victor and Anna Brofka.

Teresa is survived by daughter Heather Marugame, sisters Carol Tangalin, Vicki Rocco and granddaughter Shya Masuda.

A graveside service will be held for both Teresa Brofka and Dennis Marugame on Friday, April 5, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
